10 Movies You Should Check Out in 2017

Another year, another list of awesome new movies to check out. I’m really excited about this year’s lineup, as it has a little sampling of every genre. It’s extremely difficult to narrow my list down to 10 movies. Unfortunately, not many people have the time or money to check out each and every movie release.

So, without further delay, here are 10 movies you should check out in 2017!

10. The Great Wall

I’m honestly intrigued by director Zhang Yimou’s upcoming film, The Great Wall. Centered around a group of soldiers desperately trying to defend the Great Wall of China from a monster invasion during the Song Dynasty, The Great Wall is cited as the most expensive Chinese film to date at $150 million.

Whether or not The Great Wall will be able to live up to its budget remains to be seen. However, I cannot deny that the visuals and sheer, epic storytelling showcased in the trailer convince me that this is a film I have to for myself. If you want to satiate your curiosity, be sure to check The Great Wall this February 17th.

9. Alien: Covenant

Prometheus may have left a sour taste in the mouths of Alien fans. Thankfully, the franchise is getting another shot to do things right with Alien: Covenant. Here, director Ridley Scott will offer fans what looks to be a worthy Alien prequel. Directorial merit aside, there’s no guarantee the film will be a success.

Nevertheless, I can’t help but feel like we’ve all lived and learned from Prometheus, which gives Alien: Covenant a much better shot at success. The trailer looks great, the story sounds promising, and overall I have a lot of hope riding on the shoulders of Alien: Covenant. Be sure to check it out in theaters on May 19th!

8. Beauty and the Beast

This live-action adaptation of the beloved 1991 classic has all the right components to be a hit. Following in the glass footsteps of 2015’s live-action Cinderella, which was critically acclaimed, 2017’s Beauty and the Beast casts Emma Watson as the smart, independent Belle.

Right off the bat, you can tell the visuals are going to be stunning. Which shouldn’t come as a surprise considering this is a Disney film. I can’t wait to see this tale as old as time on March 10th!

7. Wonder Woman

It’s no secret that comic book movies have been on a winning streak lately. Wonder Woman looks to continue that trend while further connecting the iconic DC storylines together. Whether or not you liked Batman V. Superman, it’s hard to ignore the solid performance Gal Gadot put into the character.

She didn’t have much screentime in Batman V. Superman, but boy did she leave a lasting impression! I’m thrilled to see a standalone Wonder Woman film. This is one summer blockbuster you simply can’t miss. Keep your eyes on the skies for Wonder Woman on June 2nd!

6. John Wick: Chapter 2

The original John Wick surprised me. Walking in, I knew I’d like the film based on its premise and star actor Keanu Reeves, but I wasn’t expecting to love it as much as I did. There was something so gripping and visceral about the whole thing that got your blood pumping.

John Wick 2 looks like a promising follow-up, one that has the potential to improve upon the already steady John Wick platform. With a release date of February 10th, you may just want to spoil your loved one with a pair of tickets to John Wick 2!

5. Logan

It’s no secret that 2017 is ripe with juicy new comic book movies, a vast majority coming from the hit machine that is Marvel. I feel like the films chronicling Wolverine and Thor have yet to be explored to their full potential. Thankfully, we have 2017’s Logan, which is based off the incredible read, Old Man Logan.

In addition to Hugh Jackman’s reprisal as Wolverine, Logan also includes an appearance from Patrick Stewart as the enigmatic Professor X. Get ready to sink your claws into Logan on March 3rd!

4. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Alas, we’re right back on the comic book movie hype train. The rampant success of the first film came as something of a surprise, as the comic book source material was somewhat lesser known. However, this ragtag group of heroes is impossible not to love.

To be honest, I’m more excited for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 than I am for any other comic book movie releasing this year (with the exception of the Justice League film for various reasons). This movie will have you saying “I am Groot” all over again when it releases to theaters on May 5th!

3. Justice League

Speaking of the Justice League, where would this list be without it? Not only is this movie releasing to theaters on my birthday, November 17th, but it includes some of my favorite actors… all in one film. You have Jason Momoa as Aquaman, the return of Batfleck, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, and more!

This movie is a huge deal for DC fans as it’s pretty much the DC version of The Avengers. DC may have had a bumpy start, but I can see promising things ahead. Especially if this group of heroes can play off each other well on screen.

2. Star Wars: Episode VIII

J.J. Abrams is on a roll with his revival of the Star Wars franchise. First, you had the breakout success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, then the beloved prequel, Star Wars: Rogue One. Where will Abrams go next remains a mystery… for now.

We know that Star Wars: Episode VIII is in the works, and will release in December (the 15th to be exact), just like its predecessors. Personally, I’m hoping the film pays a small tribute to Carrie Fischer, as her loss at the end of 2016 was nothing short of devastating. I’m excited to see Episode VIII, as it’s the closest thing to a guaranteed hit as you can get on this list.

1. Blade Runner 2049

It’s no secret that Ridley Scott’s 1982 classic, Blade Runner, is one of the greatest science fiction movies of all time. Based off of the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by the prolific Philip K. Dick, Blade Runner is serious, no-nonsense science fiction at its best.

You can imagine my surprise when I heard the words “Blade Runner 2049” recently. I feel like this film’s announcement came out of nowhere, and I for one am down to give it a try. It’s tough to predict whether or not this follow-up film will be as good as its predecessor, better, or somewhere in-between, it’s a must-see for science fiction fans when it releases on October 6th.

There you have it, my top 10 must-see films of 2017. Which movie are you most excited to see this year? Let me know in the comments below, and stay tuned as I’ll be posting up film reviews for each and every film on this list once they’re released!
